Ak-Chin Southern Dunes
Par-72, measures 7,546 yards from the back tees.
Located to the south of The Valley of the Sun, the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes course was originally designed by Fred Couples in collaboration with Schmidt-Curley Design, and was later refined and enhanced by the renowned golf course architect Brian Curley. This course is a links-style design set in the heart of the Sonoran Desert. With wide fairways, over 100 strategically placed deep bunkers, and undulating greens it will prove challenging, yet playable for all skill levels due to its six sets of tees. Southern Dunes is maintained by Troon Golf Management, and has hosted several notable tournaments and qualifiers, including US Open and Arizona State Amateur qualifiers. This highly regarded course offers a blend of challenge, beauty and playability for both casual and serious golfers.
Whirlwind Cattail
Par-72, measures 7,249 yards from the back tees.
The Cattail Course, also designed by Gary Panks, offers a different challenge, with more water hazards and narrower fairways compared to Devil’s Claw. Accuracy is key on this risk-reward designed course. The layout blends beautifully with the natural desert surroundings and offers stunning views of the nearby mountains. Whirlwind Golf Club has strong ties to Native American culture, with course designs and names that pay homage to the Gila River Indian Community. Whirlwind is regularly ranked among the best in Arizona and is a popular destination for golfers looking for a serene desert golf experience with a bit of a challenge.
Whirlwind Devil's Claw
Par-72, measures 7,029 yards from the tips.
Rolling fairways, elevated greens, and sweeping desert vistas is what you’ll find on the Devil’s Claw Course designed by Gary Panks. The course incorporates natural desert terrain and arroyos creating a beautiful and challenging round for golfers of all levels. The wide fairways give players some room for error but the greens are well protected by bunkers.
Dinosaur Mountain
Par-72, measures 6,653 yards from the tips.
Dinosaur Mountain Golf Club is located in Gold Canyon, Arizona. It may be the shortest course on our list but it is by no means the easiest. Dinosaur Mountain is one of the premier public golf courses in the state and is renowned for its dramatic elevation changes, scenic views and challenging layout. The course offers breathtaking views of the Superstition Mountains, and elevated tees provide panoramic vistas that are considered some of the best in the Southwest. With holes that play uphill and downhill, careful shot placement and strategy is required on this Ken Kavanaugh designed desert course.
